SPICE @ Eunos Malay Heritage Learning Journey on 30 January 2015

In conjunction with ‘Eunos Celebrates SG50’, the school organised a learning journey to familiarise our international parents with the local culture and way of life as well as create a support network amongst international parents. About 30 parents joined in the half-day programme. In her welcome note to all the participants, Principal Mrs Choy expressed hope that the participants would benefit from this new initiative and discover new things about the local culture. The ice-breaker session was facilitated by SPICE Vice-Chairman, Ms Joanna Ong-Balinghasay. A few SPICE executive members also shared their early experiences of living in Singapore.

The learning journey included stops at the Malay Heritage Centre, Bussorah Street, the Sultan Mosque and the shops surrounding Arab Street. The parents especially liked the Arabic perfumes at a well-known aromatics outlet. The learning journey ended with a ‘mandatory’ stopover at the ever-popular Rich and Good Cake Shop where participants indulged in assorted flavoured swissrolls made from real fruits.

On the way back to school, participants were quizzed on what they had learnt from the heritage tour. The day’s programme ended with participants savouring sumptuous Nasi Kuning for lunch. Each participant also took home a souvenir bag comprising a few traditional games for them to play and interact with their children and family members.  It was evident that most found it a very enjoyable and meaningful programme.

“I am looking forward to the next similar programme. I hope to see more local parents participating as well so that I can make new friends,” said Ms Kirsti Rusiecki, one of the international parents. “Although I am a Singaporean, I have not visited this part of Singapore. It is an eye-opener and I really learnt a lot about the Malay culture,” said Ms Doris, one of the parent helpers.

We hope to organise more of such tours on the back of the success of this learning journey.

SPICE @ Eunos Family Fun Bowl at Kallang Leisure Park, Saturday 18 May

Close to 260 parents, pupils and staff participated in what could be
the biggest outing to date organised by Eunos Parent Support Group or
SPICE @ Eunos. It was amazing to see how a game of bowling could bond
and connect families and friends. It was certainly a testimony of our
strong partnership with our parents as key stakeholders. The
organising committee was led by Mr Toh Tuck Choy, Vice-Chairman of
SPICE @ Eunos. After the cheering and prize-giving had subsided,
everyone tucked in to a hearty KFC meal. The winning teams won for
themselves $40 vouchers each and they were:

P1 and 2 levels - Aniq Ghaisan of P1/6 and his father, Mr Muhd Ghaisan

P3 and 4 levels- Aliya Qistina of P3/2 and her father, Mr Khairul Salleh

P5 and 6 levels - Nabil Rafael of P6/2 and his father, Mr Roslan Ibrahim Staff

Congratulations to the winning teams and we look forward to another
round of fun bowl at the end of Term 4.
